From the cast-iron K6 red box to the glass-and-steel kiosks that lined every high street through the 1990s, This site documents their history, design, and the machines themselves.
At their peak in the late 1980s and 1990s, there were around 100,000 public payphones across the United Kingdom. Every high street, village green, and motorway service station had at least one, and in city centres they clustered on nearly every block.
When British Telecom was privatised in 1984, a new era of payphone design began. The old red cast-iron boxes were gradually joined and in many cases replaced by a new generation of modern kiosks: glass and steel, fully weatherproofed, and designed for the demands of a busier, more mobile public.
This site documents those modern kiosks and the payphone network as a whole: the KX range, the K-series red boxes, and all the others that defined British streetscapes through the 1980s and 1990s. It is not affiliated with any telecommunications company.

British public telephone kiosks span more than a century of design, from the early K-series red boxes to the KX enclosed range.
The first standardised red telephone kiosk. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and constructed from cast iron. A domed roof with open crown motif panels at the top. Relatively rare survivor today; most examples in London and major cities.
An experimental design combining a concrete body with cast-iron fittings, intended as a cheaper alternative to the K2. Commercially unsuccessful and short-lived; never rolled out widely. Very few examples survive.
The definitive British telephone box. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V. Cast iron, painted Post Office red, with distinctive domed top, crown motifs, and large glazed panels. Thousands remain listed buildings; many have been adopted by communities following BT's removal programme.
The final red kiosk design before the modern era. Constructed from lighter materials than the cast iron of earlier boxes, making it significantly cheaper to produce. A more angular, utilitarian aesthetic than the K6. Produced in relatively small numbers and less numerous today than the K6.
The original modern enclosed kiosk. Silver-grey aluminium frame with large glass panels. Initially coin-only; later units updated for phonecards. Replaced red boxes and older open kiosks across much of the country.
Enhanced variant of the KX100 with an upgraded specification, deployed primarily in higher-footfall locations.
Reduced-specification variant of the KX100, typically deployed in lower-demand or indoor locations.
An enclosure housing both a telephone unit and an integrated cash machine. Used to maximise the utility of high-traffic kiosk sites. The ATM was operated independently of the telephone.
Second-generation enclosed kiosk with a revised internal panel layout and improved weatherproofing over the KX100. Updated coin acceptance mechanism.
Further development of the enclosed KX range. Revised panel layout and updated coin and card mechanisms, bridging the original KX100 generation and the 400-series redesign.
The 400-series enclosed kiosks, introducing a revised aesthetic and improved vandal resistance over earlier models. The KX400, KX410, and KX420 are variants within the same design generation, each differing in payment configuration and internal specification.
The most extensive range within the numbered KX line. Sub-variants (510/511, 560/561, 570/571) differ primarily in internal specification and are often indistinguishable in the field without the terminal identification label.
The most common kiosk of the late 1990s. Identified by its dark charcoal aluminium frame and the magenta “Coins” or green “Phonecard” strip beneath the top panel. Accepted coins, phonecards, and credit cards. Became the ubiquitous face of British payphones through the second half of the decade.
A distinctive enclosed kiosk type deployed primarily in East Anglia and certain other regions, differing in external appearance from the standard KX range. Recognisable by its different frame profile and panel arrangement. Less widely distributed than the KX series nationally.
A later-generation enclosed kiosk in BT blue livery, designed for high-traffic urban sites. Accepted coins and bank cards. Larger display panel than the KX+ and updated handset. Found primarily in city centres and transport hubs.
British payphones have accepted several forms of payment over the years, with each method identified by the colour of the kiosk’s header strip. A minimum connection charge of 60p applies to coin-operated kiosks regardless of duration.
The traditional method. Kiosks with the magenta “Coins” header accepted 10p, 20p, 50p, and £1 coins. Unused credit was not returned, so it paid to plan your call. A minimum connection charge of 60p applies regardless of call duration.
Introduced in 1981, the BT Phonecard was a prepaid card in denominations of 10, 20, 40, and 100 units. Dedicated kiosks showed a green header strip. Cards were sold at post offices and newsagents. Phonecards were discontinued in 2002 and are no longer accepted at any kiosk.
Discontinued 2002Many kiosks accepted both coins and credit or debit cards via a reader slot below the display. From 1987 onwards, selected kiosks were fitted with card readers, and by the time of the KX+ range most enclosed kiosks included one — making it far more convenient for travellers without change.

The first public coin-operated telephone in Britain was installed at a post office in Nottingham. Early instruments were housed within post office premises rather than on the street.
The Post Office introduced its first standardised kiosk design — a concrete-and-steel structure, functional but far from beautiful. It was quickly superseded.
Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V, the K6 became the definitive British phone box. Cast in iron and painted Post Office red, it remains one of the most recognisable pieces of British street furniture ever made.
The British Telecommunications Act 1981 separated telecommunications from the Post Office Corporation, creating British Telecommunications as a statutory body on 1 October 1981. Preparation for privatisation began almost immediately, along with plans to modernise the payphone estate.
British Telecom introduced the Phonecard, initially trialled on the Isle of Man. The card used a tamper-evident optical strip and proved enormously popular, with limited-edition designs produced from the late 1980s.
British Telecom was privatised, with around half of shares sold to the public in one of the largest share offers in British history. The company accelerated modernisation of its payphone network almost immediately.
The first KX100 enclosed glass kiosks were deployed. Lighter and far cheaper to maintain than the cast-iron K6, they spread rapidly across the country through the late 1980s. The modern payphone had arrived.
A redesigned kiosk with a dark charcoal aluminium frame and the now-familiar magenta “Coins” or green “Phonecard” header strip. The KX+ became the ubiquitous face of British payphone provision through the second half of the 1990s.
BT withdrew the Phonecard from sale. Existing cards remained usable for a period thereafter, but kiosks were progressively updated to remove card readers. Phonecard-only kiosks were converted to coin or card operation.
With mobile phone ownership rising steeply, payphone usage declined sharply. Operators began removing low-usage kiosks. A consultation process was introduced requiring local authorities to be notified before a rural kiosk could be removed.
